East Kentucky IV

Continuing the East Kentucky Project

from Typo to Wherever It Gets...

Home East Kentucky 3 EK 1 & 2

Typo to 'Wherever'? The route is now HOG'd and merged to ultimately take things as far west as Ravena.  Exactly where EK IV will finish though is open to question.  it will go at least as far as the summit of Elkatowa Hill which will give good reason for pushers on the rear westbound out of Hazard, which is an operational feature I rather like - it snarls things up nicely!  So that's the plan as it stands right about now.  As always, the plan is subject to change without notice....

Where better to start EKIV than on EK3.  Somebody pointed out the lack of a fly-ash loader at East Kentucky Power.  Fly Ash is a by-product of coal-fired power stations and is an ingredient used in the manufacture of cement.  Large quantities of the stuff are shipped by rail, so the world's most cramped power station has gained a new loading track!

Still on the EK3 part of the route - the loadout at First Creek should have had a wye connection to the main, an omission which is now remedied.  A pair of SECX Geeps idle quietly on the new connection.

At Last!  Completely Error-Free in TS2010 :)

Well the content might be error-free, but suddenly the route isn't!  When I started EKIV I decided to start taking some advantage of the advances offered in TS2010 and started using some Hi-Res ground textures.  I found some nice stuff on a third party site, downloaded it and thought 'Wow!'.  Nice textures, not TOO hi-res, but really good images.  Goldilocks textures in fact: IMHO they were Jussst Right.  Of course now the creator has closed the site and pulled the content.  The screenie shows the result of "Delete Missing Content"' after removing the stuff from CM3.  I hate re-visiting areas I have 'finished'.  Ho hummmmmm...

While I retexture EK IV I have been running Trainz on the old EK3 part of the route - it's amazing how many mistakes you pick up when you haven't looked for a while!  This shot is from just East of Lothair.

October 2012

This route has been on the back burner for a while, but enthusiasm has returned!  Not only is the route being extended, but the existing bit is getting yet another face lift!  Look for new SAM track, YARNish2 roads (with traffic!), better signalling, ATLS crossings, spline grass, even more trees plus whatever else I spot as I go along.  About the only thing that won't change is that the route is still in TS10 Compatibility Mode...

New track, ATLS crossings, YARNish roads, all sorts of changes....

     ...including grass!

April 2013

Once again the route has been on hold!  I love this route, and it will get done.  Honest it will!  It's hard yakka though building it - there is a mindless slog involved in getting the trees done and building the route night after night does take it's toll.  Every now and again though something prompts me to change to Compatibility Mode and fire it up.  This time it was RRMods new CSX Grey Ghost GP40-2, cause this was the obvious route to screenshot it on.  It would look better, I thought, on darker track.  Only a moments work to swap the track, right?  Then just a few minutes to change the ballast in camera range, then fill in a bare spot or two in a background hillside, then there is that Russian Bridge Kit I've been meaning to play with, and that's it:  I'm hooked again...

The brilliant new CSX Stealth (or Grey Ghost) Scheme GP40-2 from RRMods - the loco I'm blaming for re-kindling the EK affair...

Another new loco, again available through RRMods.  It's a long way from home, but what the heck....

July 2014 - new content from Chris Hackworth (n8phu) - Monon #84 is an F3A and L&N 835 is an F2A - first one in Trainz.  Nice work, Chris...

August 2014

Back at it, on the main line west of Dent...
